Zone401: A Dynamic Sci-Fi Platformer

Arionis Games has developed the browser game Zone401 — a dynamic 2D action platformer with shooter elements and procedurally generated levels. The project demonstrates how modern web technologies make it possible to create fully-fledged gaming solutions with high dynamics, complex logic, and stable performance right in the browser.

Zone401 combines fast-paced combat mechanics with endless level generation to create a gameplay experience that never gets repetitive and keeps the player constantly on their toes.

Game concept

Zone401 is a sci-fi platformer in which the player goes through levels, fights enemies and gradually strengthens their character.

The project's key feature is procedural generation. After completing one level, the next one is generated automatically, changing the placement of objects, enemies, and gameplay dynamics. This turns the game into an endless loop with high replayability.

The player's main task is to survive, adapt, and effectively use the available tools to progress.

Gameplay

Zone401's gameplay is built on a combination of movement, shooting, and tactical decisions.

Player:

  • moves along platforms
  • uses jumps and dashes
  • fights with opponents
  • switches weapons depending on the situation

The game's dynamics require quick reactions and understanding of enemy behavior.

Combat system

The game features full-fledged shooter mechanics adapted for platforming.

The player has access to several types of weapons, each with its own characteristics:

  • Basic weapon for stable damage
  • energy-limited laser
  • grenade launcher taking into account gravity and trajectory
  • additional weapon options

Each weapon type requires a different approach and affects the playstyle.

Enemies and interactions

The game features several types of opponents:

  • flying enemies
  • ground opponents
  • stationary turrets

Each type has its own behavior and attack logic. Enemies create a variety of interaction scenarios and require the player to adapt.

Movement mechanics

The gameplay is based on the character's high mobility:

  • double jump
  • dash
  • physics of gravity
  • air traffic control

These mechanics create fast and intense gameplay.

Progression system

Zone401 includes a character development system:

  • Points are awarded for completing levels and destroying enemies
  • Upgrade section is available
  • the player can improve characteristics
  • unlock new weapons

Progression increases engagement and adds depth to the gameplay.

Technological implementation

Zone401 is developed using a modern web stack with an emphasis on performance and flexibility.

The game is implemented entirely in HTML5 Canvas — all graphics, interface, and HUD are rendered within the canvas without the use of standard HTML/CSS elements.

PixiJS

Used as the main engine for rendering graphics, animations and effects.

JavaScript

Responsible for game logic, physics, level generation and object behavior.

This approach ensures:

  • high performance
  • unified rendering
  • interface flexibility
  • stable operation on different devices
Zone401 2

Platform support

The game is developed as a cross-platform solution:

  • works in modern browsers
  • adapted for mobile devices
  • supports mouse and touch control

The launch occurs instantly, without installation.

Results of the work

The project resulted in the creation of a browser game that combines:

  • dynamic action gameplay
  • procedural level generation
  • a well-thought-out combat system
  • stable operation on web technologies

Zone401 demonstrates a high level of development and can serve as the basis for a full-fledged game product.
